About Us
The UBC Electric Car Club is a multi-disciplinary group of UBC students founded in August 2009. The group has transformed a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle into a long range electric vehicle.
In September 2010, the “E-Beetle” became the first electric car to drive across Canada. Since its return, we have installed new batteries and improved aspects of reliability and drivability. We’re now finishing a battery heating system in preparation for a test trip to Edmonton this winter.
Our next project will be an electric drag car based on… another beetle. Previously raced in Calgary, the new car will seek to break the world record for the fastest 1/4 mile in a street legal electric car.
